Winter sports programs gear up for the season as fall sports wind down
However, football is still part of the high school landscape. The championships in all seven Minnesota high school football classes (yes, there are only seven football classifications in the state) will begin Friday and Saturday at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis after the Thanksgiving turkeys have completely digested.
But for sports programs in southwest Minnesota, it’s all about winter sports now.
High school girls hockey the teams are in fact already well into their seasons. The Worthington Trojans were scheduled to play Tuesday, November 23 at Waconia, already their fourth game of the campaign.
Saturday is a day for basketball in Worthington. At 4 p.m., the Worthington High School women’s team opens its season against the Northwestern Iowa Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Worthington. After that game, at 6 p.m., the Minnesota West Lady Jays host Bethany Lutheran JV.
On Sundays, the two West basketball the teams are in action, with the women hosting Ellsworth Community College at 1 p.m. and the men taking on Ellsworth at 3 p.m.
Tuesday, November 30 is the first high school action packed night for Trojans. At 5.30 p.m. girls hockey the team is in New Ulm, and at 7 pm the boys’ hockey team faces its counterparts in New Ulm. At 6 pm, the St. James area competes in Worthington in the WHS Gymnastics Opening Game. At 7 p.m., the Trojan girls’ basketball team takes off in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Thursday, December 2 is another busy day. The WHS struggle The women’s hockey team participates in a quadrangular meet at the Lycée Central Lyon from 6 p.m. The women’s hockey team welcomes Windom Area at 7 p.m. And the men’s basketball team plays its first game of the season against Southwest Minnesota Christian , in Worthington, from 7:30 p.m.
Although the southwest corner of our state has no teams competing this year in the Soccer championships, the clashes are sure to please any normal football fan.
Friday at 10 a.m., Minneota and Mayer Lutheran face off in class A. Friday also in class AA, Chatfield and West Central Area / Ashby have their showdown at 1 p.m. In AAAA class Friday at 4 p.m., it’s Kasson-Mantorville and Hutchinson at this. And in class AAAAAA, Maple Grove and Lakeville South play at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, LeRoy-Ostrander and Fertile-Beltrami will play for the title at 9 from 10 a.m. In AAA class, Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Dassel-Cokato will compete at 1 p.m. in class AAAAA.
That’s it. Seven games in seven classes this weekend after Thanksgiving. Officially, there are no plans at this time to expand to more high school classes. But if seven isn’t enough for you, write a complaint letter to the Minnesota State High School League.
Until the readiness of southwest Minnesota Soccer fans are concerned, however, you are not forgotten. The 2021 zone football team will be released on Saturday.
