Sheehan hockey records second consecutive shutout; Defilio gets the hat trick
NORTHFORD — Sheehan’s hockey team continued to excel at both ends of the ice Wednesday, posting their second consecutive shutout in a 5-0 SCC/SWC Division II game with host Branford at the Northford Ice Pavilion.
Hot on the heels of Monday’s 6-0 win at Milford and the final two goals in Sunday’s 8-6 win over Guilford, the Titans have now scored 13 unanswered goals as they improve to 15-4- 0.
Anthony Defilio punctuated Wednesday’s triumph over Branford with a hat trick. Goaltenders Michael Fritz and Justin Lyon combined the shutout.
The Titans were leading edge to edge. Just 2:04 into the match, Defilio scored their first goal assisted by Max Festa and Andry Guy.
With that help, Festa tied Anthony Romano’s Sheehan scoring record by a freshman with 48 seconds. Before the end of the period, Festa broke it when he and Guy set up Defilio again, this time with just 0.7 seconds on the clock.
Between the two, defenseman Brenden Hilinski had a shot from the point. Aiden Koenig got the assist.
Sheehan extended a three-goal lead to 4-0 in the second period when Defilio completed his hat trick thanks to assists from James Stratton and Tyler Connery.
Gavin Mastel capped off the day with an unassisted goal early in the third period.
At 15-4, the Titans sit third in the CIAC Division II playoff standings behind No. 1 North Haven (16-2) and No. 2 Lyman Hall (14-3). Both of these teams played games late Wednesday night – North Haven vs. Guilford, Lyman Hall at Norwalk-McMahon.
Sheehan ends the regular season at home in Choate on Saturday afternoon against Southington Co-op.
Guilford 8, Blades 3: The top-seeded Grizzlies (11-6) defeated No. 5 Amity-North Haven-Cheshire Co-op in an SCC Tournament semi-final at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Samantha Drane had a goal and two assists for the Blades (4-15). Elaina Scasino and Avery DePodesta also scored goals. Ellen Barto got an assist.
