New centurions trained to make Renfrewshire kids play hockey

Renfrewshire youth keen to try their skills on the hockey field can now join a brand new junior section started by two of the area’s top clubs.
The New Centurions are a brand new team now operational in the region thanks to players from Anchor Hockey Club and Ferguslie Ladies Hockey Club.
The two clubs, which are about to celebrate their 100th anniversary in the same year, have decided to join forces to give young people the opportunity to try their hand at sport.
Aimed at ages 10 to 14, sessions take place weekly and teach aspiring hockey players basic skills and how to play.
The first training session took place last week at ON-X in Linwood, and Anchor club president David Stone was thrilled with the attendance.

He told Express Sport: âBoth clubs have been involved for a long time and we wanted to bring junior players to each of the clubs. After speaking with Renfrewshire Leisure, we decided it would be good to create a team and involve children aged 10-14.
âWe have had a good response so far and hope to attract more children as training continues. The hope is that they will come, try it and enjoy it and end up making it into the senior teams of the clubs.

“We were fortunate enough to get grants to provide them with kits as well, which cuts costs for parents.”
