As the calendar rotates through November, the high school club hockey season is now underway.
Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association rivals Freeburg-Waterloo and Columbia were both in action Monday to kick off their respective 2021-22 campaigns.
The Raging Bulldogs started off with an 8-2 win over Vianney in his first game of the season.
Logan Ganz, the Raging Bulldogs’ senior assistant captain, had a hat trick and distributed five assists to lead all the scorers.
Ganz, a Freeburg-Waterloo team leader for many seasons, was selected by the Connecticut Junior Rangers of the US Premier Hockey League at the 2020 National College Development Conference.
Freshman Caiden Anderson scored two goals for his first points in high school.
Other goals scored for Freeburg-Waterloo were senior captain Donovan Knuckles, second student Connor Blair and senior Keary Thompson.
Brayden Richey, a junior, collected three assists.
Matthew Bushee made 20 saves at the net for the Raging Bulldogs, who faced Bethalto on Tuesday at McKendree Metro Rec Plex in O’Fallon.
Freeburg-Waterloo took two wins in two tries on Tuesday night, leading to an 8-0 victory over Bethalto. Ganz again led the offensive charge with three goals and two assists. Knuckles and Blair have each scored twice and rookie Austin Hopfinger notched his first career college goal. The Raging Bulldogs dominated Bethalto 58-6.
Connor Miller got the shutout in net for Freeburg-Waterloo.
The Ice Eagles also opened the game Monday night, beating 1-1 with Granite City.
The mark for Columbia was second Nathan Carr, assisted by second Dean Lyon.
The Ice Eagles face East Alton-Wood River in Granite City on Thursday night.
Columbia plays Monday against Alton at East Alton and Tuesday against Belleville at McKendree Metro Rec Plex.
