List of fun things to do on hot summer days in Austin

Austin had its hottest week on record in July, and temperatures aren’t expected to drop any time soon.

The city offers countless ways to beat the heat while having fun.

Outdoor activities

Barton Springs Pool

Cost: $2 to $5 for Austin residents, $4 to $9 for nonresidents

Hours: Monday to Sunday from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a weekly closing on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Barton Springs is a three-acre spring-fed pool located in Zilker Park. Pool depths vary from 0 to 18 feet.

To purchase admission tickets to Barton Springs or another of Austin’s many city pools, use the ATXSwims app, available at google play or the Apple Store where to buy them on line.

Rhythm Bend Park

Cost: $5 for a day

Hours: Monday to Sunday from sunrise to dusk, no new entries one hour before dusk

Pace Bend is a park located in western Travis County on the bluffs of Lake Travis. It provides access to the lake with designated swimming areas Mudd Cove, Kate’s Cove and Gracy Cove. The park also offers fishing spots and boat ramps.

Zebra mussels have been found along the park’s shoreline, so visitors are advised to exercise caution when entering the water.

Zilker Botanical Garden

Cost: $6 to $8 for adults, $3 to $4 for youth

Hours: Daily 9am-6pm

This botanical garden inside Zilker Park includes several themed gardens that visitors can immerse themselves in. It includes a Japanese garden, a prehistoric-themed garden, a rose garden, and more. There are also streams and koi ponds located throughout the grounds, giving the place a relaxed atmosphere.

McKinney Falls State Park

Cost: $6 for adults for daily use, free for children under 12

Hours: 8am-10pm

McKinney Falls is located just 13 miles from the State Capitol and offers swimming, fishing, hiking and more. The park also includes an observation deck to view the upper falls and a bat cave.

The park’s visitor center also lends Junior Ranger Explorer packs, fishing rods and gear.

ATX Quest

Cost: $45 for a water park day pass, $59 for the Wake + Water Park day pass

Hours: Monday to Friday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until August

Quest ATX offers an array of fun summer activities: a wired wakeboard park and wakeboard rental, an obstacle course on the lake, a rope tower, a blob, two 85-foot slides and paddle boards!

There is a food truck on site and visitors are also allowed to bring their own food and drinks, but there is a $10 cooler fee.

Karting at Circuit of the America’s gives visitors the opportunity to take part in a fun race right next to the Austin Formula 1 track. The go-kart track has 15 turns and the karts reach up to 55 mph.

Typhoon Texas

Typhoon Texas is an outdoor water park located in Pflugerville. It offers cabin rentals, multiple dining options, bars, and several attractions including a lazy river.

Top Golf offers a fun, high-tech way to show off your golf swing. The batting bays are air-conditioned and each is equipped with an HD television. The location also offers a sports bar and restaurant.

indoor activities


Cost: $10 for a day pass that gives you access to over 150 arcade games

Hours: Sunday-Thursday 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Friday-Saturday 10 a.m.-1 a.m.

Cidercade is family-friendly, but after 8 p.m. only those 21 or older are allowed in.

A day pass gives visitors access to nearly 200 arcade games. Each game is included in the game pass, so there is no need to pay with a game card or money.

There’s a cider bar on-site that offers hard ciders, hard kombuchas, hard seltzers, and hard smoothies. There are also soft drinks available and a restaurant.

The Cidercade’s outdoor patio is located directly on Lady Bird Lake, offering visitors beautiful views of the downtown Austin skyline.

Austin Block Project

Cost: $18 for an adult pass, $14 for a student/youth pass

Hours: Monday-Friday 6am-11pm, Saturday-Sunday 8am-10pm

Austin Bouldering Project is an indoor climbing gym. The gym only offers bouldering, which is climbing without a harness, but there are crash pads on the floors to provide a cushioned surface when climbers jump off the wall or take a fall.

ATX Upstairs Circus

Hours: Tuesday-Thursday 3pm-10pm, Friday 3pm-11pm, Saturday 11am-11pm, Sunday 12pm-6.30pm

Upstairs Circus is a place where those 21 and older can enjoy libations while getting a little crafty. After making a reservation, visitors can choose a DIY project from the project menu. The menu offers a variety of projects with varying difficulties. Some examples include coasters, a leather pet collar, a beaded bracelet, and distressed wood artwork.

Kalahari Resort

Hours: The hours of operation of the indoor water park are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Kalahari Resort at America’s Largest Indoor Water Park! In addition to the water park, the complex includes bowling, an arcade, escape rooms, shows and more.

In addition to offering rooms and suites, the park offers day passes for those who don’t want to stay overnight.

Chaparral Ice

Cost: $12 for standard admission, $6 for skate rental

Hours: Every day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Fareground is the perfect place to graze all day in air conditioning. It offers six different restaurants, two bars, and all-day coffee as well as local Austin artisan shops.

Various events and specials are held regularly, including happy hour, weekend brunch, and live music.
