Fall sports season begins Monday, August 8 statewide

Michigan State high school athletes and coaches have Monday, August 8, circled on their calendars.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m., fall practices will begin, from Copper Harbor High School at the tip of the Upper Peninsula to Morenci High School a few miles from the state line in the Lower Peninsula.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has sanctioned a total of nine fall sports to officially kick off the 2022-23 season.

For example, for the boys in the lower peninsula, training begins for football, soccer, cross country and tennis; meanwhile, girls’ workouts begin for volleyball, cross country, swimming and diving, and tennis in the Upper Peninsula.

Along with the fall sports slate, MSHAA sanctions, sideline cheering, field hockey, boys’ water polo, and boys’ and girls’ equestrian sports begin.

The coaches are excited to be able to practice ahead of the start of the 2022-23 Lakes Valley Conference season.

The Lakes Valley Conference (LVC) enters its sixth competitive season this fall with nine schools including Walled Lake Central, Walled Lake Western, Walled Lake Northern, Milford, Lakeland, South Lyon East, South Lyon, Waterford Mott and Waterford Kettering.

After a summer that saw their players participate in numerous off-season camps and intense workouts in the weight room, the girls’ golf and boys’ tennis seasons kick off on Monday, August 15.

On Wednesday, August 17, the men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, volleyball, swimming and diving seasons begin.

Football games kick off the gridiron across the state on Thursday, August 25.

How many LVC teams and individuals will be competing in the MHSAA Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country National Finals on Nov. 5 at Michigan International Speedway?

In men’s soccer, who will advance to the MHSAA final on Nov. 5?

How many women’s golf teams and individuals from the LVC will make it to the MHSAA Finals which kicks off Oct. 14 at various venues across the state?

On the grill, which LVC football team has a chance to travel to Ford Field on November 24-25 to compete for the MHSAA Championship?

Will the LVC have teams competing for the MHSAA Women’s Volleyball Championship on Nov. 19 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek?

Will the MHSAA Men’s Tennis Finals have LVC teams on October 13, 14 and 15?

Look for a group of outstanding LVC swimmers and divers to compete November 18-19 in the MHSAA Finals.
