Eugenie Le Sommer loan: OL Reign signs a Lyon star for the NWSL season

OL Reign has added another big name to its squad with the transfer of the top scorer in the history of the French national women’s team, Eugénie Le Sommer.

The 31-year-old striker comes on loan from parent club Lyon for a season, where she won 10 Women’s Division 1 titles and seven UEFA Champions League trophies in 11 years. Sommer is also the club’s all-time top scorer with 274 goals and recorded 86 goals in 175 appearances for France.

German defender Dzsenifer Marozsán and French goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi will also arrive on loan in June as soon as the FIFA summer transfer window opens, in conjunction with reigning Welsh Footballer of the Year Megan Rapinoe and Jess Fishlock . And after France and Germany failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, Marozsán, Le Sommer and Bouhaddi will be available throughout the summer, giving OL Reign an advantage in the NWSL playoff race.

“I’m really excited to join OL Reign, it’s a new challenge for me and I’m ready to take it on,” Le Sommer said in a club statement. “I’ve been following the Championship for many years and it’s one of the best leagues in the world.

“I can’t wait to play my first game and meet the OL Reign fans at Cheney Stadium. I’m also very happy to take advantage of the connection between OL and OL Reign which allows me to stay in the OL family. “

The news could get even better for OL Reign, who also reportedly brought US star Rose Lavelle into the fold, according to Equalizer. The club traded with the Washington Spirit for their NWSL rights ahead of their short-term deal with Manchester City. Lavelle, however, is set to run out of time for the Olympics.

OL Reign has seven points in four NWSL Challenge Cup games and opens the regular season on Saturday against North Carolina Courage.
