Bayview Yacht Club seeks to save its business, the sport of sailing

Bayview has around 350 full-time active members, down more than 25% from its pre-recession peak, while most members are around 50 and over. The club, which operates as a nonprofit 501 (c) (7) social club, achieves approximately $ 4 million in annual revenue. This declined somewhat last year due to the pandemic, but membership has not declined. Stormes said the club was financially viable, but needed more members to stay that way. The goal is to reach 400 in the next 18 months.

Sailing remains at the center of the club’s mission. It has 10 boats spanning 20 feet and offers boat slides and storage. It hosts a popular junior sailing program, collegiate sailing, winter seminars and a variety of races including international matches and the popular Bayview Mackinac race, also known as the Port Huron to Mackinac race.

The costs for a full active membership for those 35 and over include an admission fee of $ 2,500, a monthly membership fee of $ 200, and a minimum quarterly expense of $ 150. There are incentives for younger members. Admission fees are $ 100 for 27-35 year olds and monthly dues are less than half of those for older members. A junior class membership has no monthly membership fee or minimum expenses. People aged 22 to 26 pay $ 171 per year, while those 21 and under pay $ 81 per year.

“We need a definitive new influx of young people who want to get into the sport of sailing because the sport of sailing is dying,” Kimmel said. “We are really trying to promote the sport of sailing by providing the best equipment that is aimed at the next generation.”

Management felt that the best way to strengthen their long-term navigation program was to invest in other areas. The new club will be equipped with half a dozen flexible meeting and conference rooms with Wi-Fi, printing and other office equipment. Besides sailing, offers include kayaking, golf leagues, winter hockey, hunting leagues, a book club, live music and events, as well as holiday season, weddings and rentals for other special events.

Among the most notable changes – and perhaps the biggest draw to potential young members – will be the kitchen and bar. Millennials love a good cocktail and a small plate.
