BOYS BKB: REESE 82, SOUTH LYON EST 59
When DaMarquss Troublefield is focused on something, he does it.
So when Reese’s senior entered Saturday’s game with 21 points to reach the coveted 1,000-point career milestone, it could practically be seen as a done deal.
Troublefield had 27 points, propelling the Rockets to an 82-59 victory over south Lyon East in the Battle of Midway showcase in La Coruna. Reese is off to a 4-0 start to the season, motivated by his strong-willed goaltender’s 26.8 points per game.
“He’s absolutely connected right now,” said Reese coach Justin Shepherd. “He’s playing better in those first four games than he did anytime last year – and he had a great season last year.
A two-time first-team member of the MLive Bay City Dream Team, Troublefield has carved a name for himself in Reese’s history books thanks to his prolific scoring ability. He joins Bob Zwerk (1,320), Dennis Gruber (1,196) and Kyle Stockmeyer (1,039) in the 1,000-point club in the program.
Her classmate Maddi Osantowski eclipsed the 1,000-point mark earlier in the week for the Reese women’s basketball team.
Troublefield, who won the Golden Helmet Class C Player of the Year in football this year, is on course for a huge senior campaign. After helping the Rockets reach the regional final a year ago, he appears to be on a mission for his final round.
“He plays in the game and nothing ever seems forced with him,” Shepherd said. “I asked some friends to watch the game and then say ‘It was a calm 27 points or a calm 31 points.’ And that’s because he does it at a very efficient level and in the pace of the game. “
Reese trailed South Lyon East 37-36 at halftime before turning things around with a 22-6 run. Five players scored in double digits for the Rockets, with Jake Rau totaling 17, Tanner TerBush and Jesse Stricker 12 each and Wesley Robinson 10.
HOCKEY: BAY CITY WOLVES 4, ST. CLAIR SHORES 3 (OT)
Overtime is a good time for the Bay City Wolves.
The Wolves have improved to 3-0 in overtime this season, outscoring St. Clair Shores Unified 4-3 in the Mid-Michigan Hockey Showcase at Bay County Civic Arena on Saturday.
Kaleb Borowski did the honors this time around, scoring the game winner in the extra session as Bay City improved to 6-4.
“We found ourselves in another overtime situation, but there was no panic and we were successful,” Wolves coach Zach Schalk said. “I told Kaleb during the game that he was going to get one because it was due. What a blow on his part to finish him off.
Gunnar Weber scored two goals and an assist in the victory while Kade Brayman also scored one. Cody Deneut, McCoy Koste and Caleb Anthony each added assists for Wolves. Cayden Kerkau recorded 31 saves in the win.
FIGHT: TWO FIELDS GIVE THE TONE TO OWLS
Oscoda won two individual championships at the Don Ferguson Invitational in Grayling.
Jhonas Williams (103) and Anthony Ward (152) finished first with a 3-0 record that day. Ian Boboltz (140) was second for the Owls while Isaiah Spragg (119) was third and James London (119) and Carson Gooch (125) were fourth.
