Arsenal must stop pinching a dime and securing Onana now
Dear Edu, sign Onana and damn the Consequences by AI
Arsenal have been linked with a new goalkeeper since January. As a previous article noted, Bernd Leno is now an obsolete fit for the football we want to play.
Andre Onana is one of the most talented goalkeepers in the game. He has proven to be exceptional at the Champions League level. In fact, using the post-shot xG data, only Liverpool’s Allison Becker has outperformed him in recent seasons in Europe’s biggest competition.
Not only is Onana a talented shooter, but he’s also one of the most exciting goalkeepers in the game. His confidence and composure with the ball are quite remarkable. He has been heavily linked with Chelsea for some time. For Ajax to let him go it would have cost almost £ 40million.
However, a nearly expired contract and a UEFA ban left him available on the cheap. He will not sign a new contract at Ajax (the current one expires in January) and he will not be able to play until November. Ajax just want to get everything they can get for themselves and move on. As a result, its value dropped to single digits. There is talk of less than £ 10million for one of the best goalkeepers to come in the game.
When a player is almost at the end of a contract like this, clubs wonder why they should spend now when they can get it for free later? If a club is confident they will make a deal with the player, it only increases their reluctance to pay money for a potentially free signing in a short period of time. And Arsenal Football Club are one of those exclusive clubs who can be sure they can strike a deal with a young Ajax goalkeeper.
The dilemma is this: Onana can’t play until November. His contract expires in January. A month. Do you want to pay £ 6million for a month of uptime? Besides, you also have to pay his salary for all those months that he can’t pay. From a financial point of view, it makes no sense, even if he can play with 2 months in advance, especially in a high level club like Arsenal who can have him when he wants.
This explains why despite the interest of Inter Milan and Arsenal, no one is moving. The only active club for Onana is the one who knows they’ll never be able to have him once he can play is Lyon. Why would he go to Lyon when he has larger and more attractive offers? That’s why Lyon wants it now.
Reports have recently emerged that Onana refused to approach Lyon. He knows he can do better. Arsenal also know it, hence the silence.
However, I am of the opinion that provided Ajax cuts his nominal fees (and maybe not even), Edu Gaspar should try to get Onana signing right now. Anything we “wasted” on Onana will no longer matter to the club’s bottom line. While it makes financial sense to wait, it’s also silly to pinch a dime when the talent is so good and could possibly still go to another top club.
Of course, all the big clubs already have established goalkeepers and those who are potentially looking for reinforcements (Dortmund, Inter) cannot offer Onana a more attractive opportunity, especially financially. We are the first for his signature and can choose to wait.
In the end, however, it doesn’t matter if we are to believe the reports that we’re looking to make Ramsdale a $ 30 million signing. True, he is young, experienced and English. But the talent gap between him and Onana is still large enough to make the potential charges for Ramsdale ridiculous, when Onana is available so cheaply.
Edu Gaspar must forget all financial considerations and simply register Onana. Football is fluid and who knows if Alisson will get injured again and Liverpool will be looking for a cheap replacement in January?
Catch it now, please.
