May 2021 – Melnichuk’s first full season after signing in San Jose was nothing short of a roller coaster ride. The goaltender started the season on loan with the KHL where he posted a dazzling 1.68 goals-against average to go along with a .930 save percentage just one season ago. Rather than return to SKA St. Petersburg where he had found huge success, he was loaned to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, a much inferior team. Despite not being able to match its stellar numbers from the previous season, the Russian backstop posted a respectable 2.68 GAA and 0.912 percentage in fourteen starts. Unfortunately, the downward trend in its membership continued when it came to North America. His performance in the AHL was mediocre at best, ending the season with a GAA over three and save percentage below 0.900. The damage didn’t end there though, as he slipped in his first two NHL starts and a relief appearance for the Sharks down the home stretch. Melnichuk gave up eleven goals in his first two outings as a starter. Not exactly the way the young goalie surely hoped his NHL career would start. To his credit, Melnichuk was promoted to the Taxi Platoon and then demoted to the AHL on a sometimes weekly basis. Although he didn’t have to travel far, the uncertainty alone was enough to exclude any goalkeeper from his game. Melnichuk may not have got off to a good start in North America, but his overseas numbers should give Sharks fans some confidence in their goaltending portfolio. With Devon Dubnyk leaving and Martin Jones struggling this season, Melnichuk will most likely compete with teammate Josef Korenar for a roster spot with the Sharks in 2021-2022. Another likely scenario could see a rotation of three goalkeepers until a clear starting tandem is determined. Alex howes
